Riley is a 4yr old boy living in Cardigan. He was born four months prematurely and, due to this, developed spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy. His condition means that he will experience tightness in his muscles causing severe pain and could develop deformities as he grows.
The best way of helping Riley appears to be a complex medical procedure known as SDR (selective dorsal rhizotomy) followed by intensive physiotherapy. Further information regarding SDR can be found on the University Hospital Bristol website.
Riley has already undergone an initial assessment at Bristol Children’s Hospital and is considered a strong candidate for the procedure. The total cost for Riley’s treatment, which is not currently routinely available for children with his condition on the NHS, is £40,000. This sum includes the SDR procedure itself plus a year of intensive physiotherapy. After a year, another £20,000 will be needed for more intensive physiotherapy i.e. £60,000 in total.
Time is of the essence if Riley is to gain maximum benefit and we, his family, don’t have access to the sum of money involved. On the advice of Dr Edwards, the surgeon, we have set up a charity through just4children, Charity Registration Number-1164473.
We would be grateful for any help you are able to give: a donation, providing sponsorship for local activities or events, or simply coming up with suggestions.
